Ant Extermination Begins with a Thorough Inspection

At Exterminating Unlimited, ant control always begins with an inspection of the current area of concern followed by the remainder of the property. We implement a holistic approach that utilizes knowledge about ant behaviors and the methods they use to travel from the colony to their food sources.

Strategic Control Baiting Methods

We strategically place bait products on the inside in cracks and crevices to draw the ants to areas where customers don’t see them feeding. Also, we apply bait products around the exterior to draw them from interior walls and back outside. Additionally, we use liquid products around the exterior along the base of the foundation and along ant trails that lead to the foundation.

The bait and liquid products don’t kill the ants immediately. It takes about 24 hours, and in that time, ants return back to the colony. If they successfully fed on the bait, then they will feed it to the young and the ant colony queen. If the ants picked up the active ingredient from the liquid application, then they will transfer that ingredient to other ants by contact or feeding, thus creating a collapse of the entire colony over time.

Follow-up Ant Treatments

We always recommend follow up treatments, since many ant species have multiple queens and secondary reproductives that will leave the colony when it is under threat or trying to expand.  At Exterminating Unlimited, we inspect and make applications with the above method to collapse the small satellite colonies or separate colonies at a vulnerable time.

Types of Ants Found in Virginia

With the thousands of species of ants roaming the world, you might be wondering which type of ants are ruining your outdoor barbeque or invading the office breakroom at work. Though there are several species of ants found throughout Central Virginia, Exterminated Unlimited, Inc would like to inform you of the four most common; Little Black Ants, Carpenter Ants, Odorous Ants and Pavement Ants.

Little Black Ants in House & Yard

Little Black Ants are little, only measuring about 1/16th of an inch. They are jet black with no varying marks.  They do, however, feature a very small and weak stinger.  When little black ants’ small colonies are disturbed, they often move on in search of a more secluded nesting ground.  If they wander into your home, little black ants will be more drawn to decaying wood or masonry. Outdoors they are often spotted in the soil under rocks or debris.

Carpenter Ant Control

Carpenter Ants are more destructive than most other ants.  They tunnel their way through wood, making the wood excavations their home. They too are black, but larger, measuring in at ¼”-1/2” in length and are void of stingers. Carpenter ant colonies are larger. A well-developed colony could have 15,000 worker ants alone.  They are more attracted to the soft, moist, decaying wood, but will just as easily tunnel their paths through strong and durable hard wood.  They do most of their work at night, and when carpenter ants work their way into your wooded foundation, they can do considerable damage.

Get Rid of Odorous House Ant Infestations

Odorous Ants are so named because when they are crushed, they emit a rotten coconut type odor.  They measure in at 1/8” and have brownish coloring.  They are not equipped with a stinger, and their established colonies could have over 100,000 worker ants and multiple queens.  They prefer to call their home in soil under objects outside, but they will wander inside looking for food and water sources.

Pavement Ant Facts

Pavement Ants also are 1/8” with black bodies and brownish appendages.  They do have a stinger, but rarely rely on it.  Pavement ants usually have 3,000-4,000 ants in their colonies.  Pavement ants are usually outdoor ants that prefer the safety of soil, usually in the cracks of pavement.  If they intrude into your home, it is generally because they are in search of warmth when temperatures drop.
